Safety is important in any vehicle. Luckily, the Mitsubishi lineup offers a range of vehicles that combine innovative engineering practices with smart driver-assistance technologies to help them achieve top-notch safety ratings. Here’s a look at the top safety awards Mitsubishi has received for the 2019 and 2020 model years.
The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded two Mitsubishi vehicles with its 2019 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK safety rating. Both the seven-passenger Outlander and the Eclipse Cross crossover vehicle passed the safety organization’s stringent testing to receive this accolade.
To become an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK, these two models had to earn the organization’s top rating of “Good” in multiple crash tests. This includes the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests. The vehicles also had to earn a rating of “Acceptable” or “Good” on the passenger-side small overlap front test; an “Advanced” or a “Superior” rating for front crash prevention; and a “Acceptable” or “Good” headlight rating.
Another safety organization, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), also recognized two Mitsubishi vehicles for their safety. The Outlander and Outlander PHEV both earned the organization’s highest possible 5-Star Overall Safety Rating in its New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).
The Outlander PHEV earned four out of five stars in the overall frontal crash and rollover tests, while receiving five stars in the combined side crash ratings. For the gasoline-powered Outlander, the crash-test results were the same with four out of five stars in the overall frontal crash and rollover tests and five stars in the side crash ratings.
NHTSA’s NCAP program evaluates a vehicle’s crashworthiness with a range of tests, incorporating the vehicle’s available safety equipment and the equipment’s effectiveness. For the Outlander PHEV and Outlander, this safety technology included Forward Collision Mitigation with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Automatic High Beams, and more.
Mitsubishi values safety above all else when designing, engineering, and manufacturing all of its vehicles from the Eclipse Cross to the Mirage. The company’s dedication towards safety was highlighted when the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV earned an overall 5-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration aims to keep highway travelers safe by monitoring road conditions, reviewing safety laws, and evaluating the safety features and integrity of all vehicles. The 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV passed its New Car Assessment Program with flying colors.
The NHTSA puts vehicles through rigorous and comprehensive safety tests designed to simulate real-life accidents. The 2020 Outlander PHEV was awarded high marks across the board. It earned four out of five stars for overall front crash and rollover tests. In the combined side crash ratings, it won a perfect five star designation from NHTSA.
The 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is outfitted with an abundance of active safety tools designed to serve as another set of eyes and ears so you can concentrate on driving. Forward Collision Mitigation with Pedestrian Detection monitors for vehicles and pedestrians ahead; if a potential collision is sensed by the program, brakes will be automatically applied.
Adaptive Cruise Control simplifies cruising so you can take your foot off the gas without worrying about immediately hitting the brakes. If your Outlander PHEV is nearing a vehicle ahead, brakes will be pressured automatically so a safe distance is maintained.
